Northern Territory Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Aged Care Training Project 2009 - 2020

Funding through the Commonwealth Department of Health ceased 30 June 2020

This project aimed to:

  • develop the NT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Aged Care workforce through the provision of culturally appropriate training;
  • ensure quality aged care services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through appropriate staffing and training; and
  • build capacity and sustainability in the aged care training workforce in the NT.

How we trained

Training was delivered on community and in the workplace using training resources and assessments developed by HKTC specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. We pride ourselves on making training and assessment enjoyable and relevant while still meeting national standards.

Students achieved competence and transferred knowledge to workplace while increasing their self-belief and confidence. This led to better services for the old people in their communities.

Over the life of the project we had 571 enrolments, 2350 units of competency completed and 62 Certificate III graduates, we also delivered many many days of non-accredited training.

Funding ceased 30 June 2020

Funding has not been extended so we are sad to say the project ceased on 30 June 2020

Where we trained

We delivered training in 13 communities in the Top End.
